free and open source software:

  • OpenJUMP (GIS)
    • this is the 2nd software installed on the lab computers
    • it is vector oriented, so to do raster analysis you will need to add the Sextante Toolbox
    • a bundled version of OpenJUMP with Sextante can be downloaded here
  • Quantum GIS
    • another popular free software, where the GRASS extension provides raster analysis functionalities
  • MapWindow GIS
    • a free GIS for vector and raster analysis
  • MapWindow GIS
    • a free GIS that is very strong in raster analysis
