* From July 2011 unti December 2012 I have been working with Dr. Andrew Hunter at the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Calgary University of Calgary] (CAN), on the [http://www.planyourplace.ca PlanYourPlace] project,
+
* Since June 2022 I am a professor at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontifical_Catholic_University_of_Valpara%C3%ADso PUCV]), Chile, in the area of transport engineering.
* I took a break from research from October 2010 to June 2011 and went backpacking in Argentina, Chile and Bolivia, to get to know these beautiful countries, and to learn Spanish from scratch.
+
* Also, and since 2013, I have been building up and coordinating the GI Services Unit at CEDEUS, the Chilean Centre for Urban Sustainable Development : [http://www.cedeus.cl cedeus.cl], at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontifical_Catholic_University_of_Chile PUC]). Or, as they prefer to say here: the [http://observatorio.cedeus.cl Observatorio CEDEUS]. At the moment, we calculate and update a set of urban sustainability indicators, run a web-accessible geodata repository (made with [http://www.geonode.org GeoNode]), some websites on urban indicators, but most importantly, we are a true team of 3 full time GI analysts, 2 contract software developers (back and front) and a contract designer.
* Previously from Sept. 2009 to Sept. 2010 I was within the group of [http://people.ucalgary.ca/~ahunter/ Dr. Andrew Hunter] at the University of Calgary (UofC) as a PostDoctoral Fellow developing tools and methods for [[Movement Analysis]] (i.e. Home Range analysis) of Grizzly Bears (based on GPS collar data).
+
* From 2015 to 2019 I did run my own research project "AccesoBarrio" to develop [http://www.ciudadcaminable.com CiudadCaminable.com], a Spanish accessibility analysis web-platform similar to [http://www.walkscore.com Walkscore.com], and also - in collaboration with the [http://walk21.org Walk21 Foundation] the Android App [http://strideapp.cedeus.cl STRIDE] to collect pedestrian walking experiences. Nowadays we made a second version of Stride.App that we call Walkability.App.
* I also did research as PostDoctoral Fellow in Landscape Ecology and object based image analysis with [http://www.geog.ucalgary.ca/index.cfm?page=people&style=2&this=173 Dr. Geoffrey J. Hay] from Feb 2008 to July 2009 at the UofC.
+
* Before coming to Chile, and also while being in Chile, I worked with Dr. Andrew Hunter at the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Calgary University of Calgary] (CAN), on the [http://www.planyourplace.ca PlanYourPlace] project and the WalkMyPlace platform from July 2011 until December 2012.
* From 2004 until 2007 I did my PhD research on Automated Map Generalization within the [http://www.geo.uzh.ch/gis/aboutus/ GIS Division] of the University of Zurich, under supervision of [http://www.geo.uzh.ch/~weibel/ Prof. Dr. Robert Weibel].
+
* I took a break from research from Oct. 2010 to June 2011 and went hosteling in Argentina, Chile and Bolivia, to get to know these beautiful South American countries, and to learn Spanish from scratch.
* From 2005 until my travels in October 2010, I  was project leader of the JUMP Pilot Project which maintains the free desktop GIS [http://www.openjump.org/ OpenJUMP].
+
* From Sept. 2009 to Sept. 2010 I was a postdoctoral fellow within the team of [http://people.ucalgary.ca/~ahunter/ Dr. Andrew Hunter] at the University of Calgary (UofC) developing tools and methods for [[Movement Analysis]] (i.e. Home Range Analysis) of grizzly bears based on GPS collar data.
 +
* I have also been a postdoctoral fellow in the GIScience, Remote sensing and Landscape ecology lab directed by [http://www.geog.ucalgary.ca/index.cfm?page=people&style=2&this=173 Dr. Geoffrey J. Hay] (and Dr. Greg McDermid) from Feb 2008 to July 2009 at the UofC.
 +
* From 2004 until 2007 I did my PhD research on Automated Map Generalization within the [http://www.geo.uzh.ch/gis/aboutus/ GIS Division] of the University of Zurich, under supervision of [http://www.geo.uzh.ch/~weibel/ Dr. Robert Weibel] and [https://tu-dresden.de/bu/umwelt/geo/ifk/professur-fuer-kartographische-kommunikation Dr. Dirk Burghardt].

Before you start reading this, I like to note that my ResearchGate profile may give you, perhaps, a more recent picture on what I am doing: http://www.researchgate.net/profile/Stefan_Steiniger

before you start reading this, I like to note that this section needs a '''rewrite'''...
+
Anyway, my research (as of 2020) is focusing on the following areas within GISystems & Science and its application:
 +
# urban mobility and accessibility, and in particular walkability,
 +
#* see [http://www.ciudadcaminable.com CiudadCaminable] (in Spanish) and the [http://strideapp.cedeus.cl STRIDE Android app],
 +
# urban sustainability indicators implementation and their visualization,
 +
#* see [http://indicadores.cedeus.cl CEDEUS Indicator Plattform] , and [http://oirm.cedeus.cl Santiago Regional Indicators Plattform], both in Spanish
 +
# spatial data infrastructures for urban research,
 +
#* see [http://datos.cedeus.cl CEDEUS Data Plattform].

My research interests are focusing on three areas within GISystems & Science and its application:
+
Work-wise, I am in charge of (1) running GeoNode, a mini spatial data infrastructure, (I manage a couple of servers for that) (2) the calculation and updating of 30 urban indicators for 16 cities - together with a team of people, as well as (3) the development of urban dashboard web applications for the visualization of urban indicators at municipal level. All of this at the (Urban) [http://observatorio.cedeus.cl Observatory] of [http://www.cedeus.cl CEDEUS.cl].

# Automated Cartography & Map Generalization,
+
In the past I have also looked at:
# The development of spatial analysis algorithms for landscape and wildlife ecology, and
+
# development of spatial analysis algorithms for landscape and wildlife ecology,
# Free and open source GIS software developments and adoption in teaching, research, and business.
+
#* see [http://horae.geosteiniger.cl OpenJUMP HoRAE] for the movement analysis of grizzly bears,

+
# participatory web platforms for urban planning,
My '''PhD project''' at the University of Zurich covered one part of the [http://www.geo.uzh.ch/gis/research/cartgen/ DEGEN project] - Data Enrichment for automated map GENeralization - that was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF). The final thesis was entitled "'''Enabling Pattern-Aware Automated Map Generalization'''" ([http://www.geo.uzh.ch/~sstein/finalpub/diss_sstein_lowres_standard_A4_nov2007.pdf pdf-small]; [http://www.geo.uzh.ch/~sstein/finalpub/diss_sstein_medres_pdfa1b2005_cmyk_A4_nov2007.pdf pdf-large]), and covered the following topics:
+
#* see results of the PlanYourPlace.ca project,

+
# map generalization,
* perception based pattern recognition approaches for the structural analysis of topographic and categorical (vector) maps
+
#* see picture on the right and some OpenJUMP GIS extensions,
* cartometrics and map object relations
+
# free and open source GIS software developments and adoption in teaching, research, and business.
* discriminant analysis algorithms for urban structure recognition
+
Well, I am of course still looking at whats happening in the free and open source geo world.
* map generalisation modeling and control: Multi-Agent-Systems, Genetic Algorithms
+
* map generalisation and signal processing algorithms: Snakes, TAFUS, Wavelets
+

+
The second part of the project was done by [http://www.geo.uzh.ch/~neun/ Moritz Neun] who developed a novel web service for web-based map generalization and GIS-(analysis) called [http://webgen.geo.uzh.ch WebGen] (see also [http://aci.ign.fr/web_service.php here])
+

+
These research topics mentioned above are also covered within my project "''PAGEVIS-LD - Pattern-Aware GEneralisation and VISualization of Land-use and Land-cover Data''", carried out at the University of Calgary. This project started in Feb. 2008 and will last until March 2010. It is financed as well by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
+

+
I also gained an interest in [http://www.geo.unizh.ch/publications/sstein/sstein_freegitools_ecoinf2009.pdf GIS application for Landscape Ecology] and '''Animal Movement Analysis'''. Hence, I was working with Andrew Hunter on the agenda of the [http://foothillsresearchinstitute.ca/pages/ProgramsGrizzly_Bear/default.aspx Foothills Research Institute Grizzly Bear Program] to develop GI tools for home range analysis based on GPS collar data.
+

+
Most of the developments for my research have been done with Open Source GIS tools and libraries (especially with [http://www.openjump.org OpenJUMP GIS]; see also below).
+

+
Apart from the topics above I also touched other topics in GIS research, such as
+

+
* Urban built-up patterns and their correlation with socio-economic data (supervised student project)
+
* Morphologic and vegetation dependent filtering of LIDAR data (supervides student project)
+
* Location-Based Services
+
* Optimal Xylomigrant placement constrained by mirco-scale traffic behaviour. :o)
+

  • perriger[-at-]gmx.de (private)
  • current location: Valparaiso & Santiago de Chile (CHL)

interests

  • areas I have touched in the past 19 years, since I started my MSc research: geographical analysis, (geographic) software development, geo-visualization, cartography, geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial data infrastructures (SDIs), urban dashboards, (Java + a little Python) programming, computational geometry, pattern recognition and data mining, machine learning, agent based systems, optimization, location based services (LBS), (land) surveying, geomatics, user centered design, urban planning, walkability, sustainability indicators, mobility, transportation planning, landscape ecology, wildlife ecology, remote sensing, e-planning, participatory mapping, social networking, writing articles, e-learning,
  • and less so: spatial databases, visual perception and cognition

bio-sketch

  • Since June 2022 I am a professor at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso (PUCV), Chile, in the area of transport engineering.
  • Also, and since 2013, I have been building up and coordinating the GI Services Unit at CEDEUS, the Chilean Centre for Urban Sustainable Development : cedeus.cl, at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (PUC). Or, as they prefer to say here: the Observatorio CEDEUS. At the moment, we calculate and update a set of urban sustainability indicators, run a web-accessible geodata repository (made with GeoNode), some websites on urban indicators, but most importantly, we are a true team of 3 full time GI analysts, 2 contract software developers (back and front) and a contract designer.
  • From 2015 to 2019 I did run my own research project "AccesoBarrio" to develop CiudadCaminable.com, a Spanish accessibility analysis web-platform similar to Walkscore.com, and also - in collaboration with the Walk21 Foundation the Android App STRIDE to collect pedestrian walking experiences. Nowadays we made a second version of Stride.App that we call Walkability.App.
  • Before coming to Chile, and also while being in Chile, I worked with Dr. Andrew Hunter at the University of Calgary (CAN), on the PlanYourPlace project and the WalkMyPlace platform from July 2011 until December 2012.
  • I took a break from research from Oct. 2010 to June 2011 and went hosteling in Argentina, Chile and Bolivia, to get to know these beautiful South American countries, and to learn Spanish from scratch.
  • From Sept. 2009 to Sept. 2010 I was a postdoctoral fellow within the team of Dr. Andrew Hunter at the University of Calgary (UofC) developing tools and methods for Movement Analysis (i.e. Home Range Analysis) of grizzly bears based on GPS collar data.
  • I have also been a postdoctoral fellow in the GIScience, Remote sensing and Landscape ecology lab directed by Dr. Geoffrey J. Hay (and Dr. Greg McDermid) from Feb 2008 to July 2009 at the UofC.
  • From 2004 until 2007 I did my PhD research on Automated Map Generalization within the GIS Division of the University of Zurich, under supervision of Dr. Robert Weibel and Dr. Dirk Burghardt.
  • From 2005 until my travels in October 2010, I was coordinating the JUMP Pilot Project which maintains the free desktop GIS OpenJUMP.

Pattern aware map generalization - a picture from the my PhD thesis

Before you start reading this, I like to note that my ResearchGate profile may give you, perhaps, a more recent picture on what I am doing: http://www.researchgate.net/profile/Stefan_Steiniger

Anyway, my research (as of 2020) is focusing on the following areas within GISystems & Science and its application:

  1. urban mobility and accessibility, and in particular walkability,
  2. urban sustainability indicators implementation and their visualization,
  3. spatial data infrastructures for urban research,

All of this at the (Urban) Observatory of CEDEUS.cl.

In the past I have also looked at:

  1. development of spatial analysis algorithms for landscape and wildlife ecology,
  2. participatory web platforms for urban planning,
    • see results of the PlanYourPlace.ca project,
  3. map generalization,
    • see picture on the right and some OpenJUMP GIS extensions,
  4. free and open source GIS software developments and adoption in teaching, research, and business.

Well, I am of course still looking at whats happening in the free and open source geo world.

OpenJUMP GIS Extensions

Over the years I programmed a couple of plugins for OpenJUMP. Lots of my work was directly integrated into the core of OpenJUMP. However, I also produced several separate extensions for JUMP/OpenJUMP like the ones below:

  • Home Range Analysis Toolbox (HoRAE) - see also Movement Analysis (it's actually an own OpenJUMP distribution)
  • Attribute classification and plotting functions - now integrated in OpenJUMP
  • Landscape Pattern Extension - An extension to extract edges, core area, patches, corridors, branches and shortcut areas as described in (Vogt et al. 2007- Ecol. Ind.) but with buffer operations. The extension provides also a set of metrics to describe single polygons and their neighboorhood: e.g. x-centroid, y-centroid, area, perimeter, concavity, elongation, shape index, Schumm's shape index, fractal dimension, MBR orientation, three buffer density indices, R-Index. Download here.
  • Selection Toolbox - now integrated in OpenJUMP
  • Save Image As SVG PlugIn - now integrated in OpenJUMP
  • MapGen Toolbox (download) - contains a number of map generalization algorithms (mostly for building generalisation), such as (i) Building Spread Narrow Parts, (ii) Enlarge Building to Rectangle, (iii) Square Building Walls, (iv) Eliminate Small Buildings, (v) Eliminate “Points in Line” of Building, (vi) Simplify Building, (vii) Simplify Building to Rectangle, (viii) Change Elongation of Building, (ix) Displace Lines, (x) Line Smoothing Simple Version, (xi) Line Simplify JTS 1.5 Algorithm, (xii) Merge Polygons ... Note, the source code is available on the OpenJUMP project SVN
